Northern Lights Tonight: Where and When to Watch the Aurora Borealis in the U.S.
Tonight, Monday, Oct. 28, 2024, there’s a good chance for northern-tier U.S. states to catch a glimpse of the northern lights. A G2-class geomagnetic storm is forecasted, which may illuminate skies with aurora borealis displays, thanks to an uptick in recent solar activity. While this storm isn't as strong as those that lit up skies from coast to coast earlier this month, residents in several northern states could still enjoy a vibrant show.

Why the Northern Lights Are Visible Tonight
This aurora event follows a surge in solar activity over the past week, including multiple solar flares that have sent streams of charged particles toward Earth. These particles interact with Earth’s magnetic field, causing the northern lights to appear near the poles. With the sun nearing its solar maximum, increased auroras are expected over the next year, providing more chances for skywatchers to witness this captivating natural display.
Tonight’s northern lights promise a stunning experience for those able to watch. Be sure to check NOAA’s aurora forecasts, and if skies are clear, you may just catch the aurora lighting up your night.
